Campaign 2010

In August 2010, the second campaign took place in Porolissum, attended by 40 students from Berlin, Cologne, Erfurt, Budapest and Cluj-Napoca. In addition, we welcomed volunteers from Australia, Cuba, Denmark and Germany to our site.

The work began with the extension of the roof which protects the excavation area. We continued four trenches from the previous year and opened four new trenches.

At the most southern trench we could reach the southern end of the building, so that it is proven now that the building had an (inner) dimension of 5.50 x 22 m. A pillar set outside at the south wall stabilized this wall. Inside, thick layers of debris were found caused by the collapse of the stone walls of the building and its eastern neighboring building (i.e. the principia). It was confirmed that the floor was formed by bricks. Larger portions of wall plaster were found fallen onto the brick floor. At the southeast corner of the building, a clay pipe was discovered that was laid across the south wall.

The function of the building remains still uncertain, since large areas of the floor level are still uncovered. For winter season, the trenches were filled with straw to protect the walls.

As in the previous year we continued the study and work at the laboratory, for washing and recording pottery, and restoring and recording small finds. In addition, soil samples were taken from inside the building for paleobotanical studies; samples were elutriated and paleobotanical remains sorted out.

During the summer course we did excursions as well, for visiting Baia Mare (Maramureş), Bistriţa (Bistriţa-Năsăud) and Tărgu Mureş (Mureş).
