The two-and-a-half-day international conference “Bodies in Ancient Egypt: Subjects, Objects, Media”, to be held in Münster, Germany, July 15-17, 2022, brings together researchers from the fields of Egyptology, Northeast African Archaeology as well as Anthropology on the topic of bodies with the aim to exchange knowledge and discuss current research approaches by opening the discourse for a broader public. The event takes up a relatively recent development in the Humanities and Ancient Studies, called the “somatic turn”, which implies an epistemic shift towards the body as a research object.

Since the establishment of the research field, Egyptology has produced extensive knowledge about Ancient Egyptian bodies. Although Ancient Egyptian material has a strong potential to critically illuminate and diversify existing research questions from other fields, new findings have only in a limited way found their way into the interdisciplinary theoretical discourse. Accordingly, there is a great need for an interdisciplinary dialogue in order to ensure that knowledge and insights flow back into neighboring disciplines. The aim of the planned event is to foster this dialogue through the scientific discussion of the following questions, among others:

  • How are bodies represented, shaped, and modeled in Ancient Egyptian visual and textual media?
  • How are bodies read, imagined, and (re)constructed by Egyptologists?
  • In which way can bodies transform from subject to object and to medium?

The project is a cooperation between the Institute of Archaeology of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Institut für Ägyptologie und Koptologie of the WWU Münster.
